Sikhism was born in the Punjab area of South Asia, which now falls into the present day states of mainly in Pakistan and some part of India. The main religions of the area at the time were Hinduism and Islam. The Sikh faith began around 1500 CE, when Guru Nanak began teaching a faith that was quite distinct from Hinduism and Islam.
Pakistan hosts most significant Sikh sites, primarily in the Punjab province, including Gurdwara Nankana Sahib (Guru Nanak’s birthplace), Gurdwara Darbar Sahib, Kartarpur (where Guru Nanak spent his last years), Gurdwara Panja Sahib (known for an imprint of Guru Nanak’s hand), and Gurdwara Dera Sahib in Lahore (where Guru Arjan Dev Ji was martyred). These most sacred locations attract Sikh pilgrims from around the world, with many efforts made to preserve them for religious and cultural heritage.
The Pakistani government actively works to preserve and promote these sites as a part of the country’s cultural heritage, encouraging Sikh pilgrims to visit from around the world.
